Fixing a Slippery Pad

I love the Big Agnes system where the pad fits into the pocket on the bottom of the bag.  One of the many benefits is that one does not slide off the pad in the middle of the night.  But if you’re mixing and matching, like I’m currently doing with a BA Insulated pad and a Montbell bag, you find yourself periodically re-orienting yourself a few times per night.

But we have the Internet, where everyone has an opinion, and every now and then, someone has a solution.  After a quick search, I found several ideas involving velcro patches, straps, and a few applications of silicone.  The one I liked best involves diluting clear goop with mineral spirits, and painting stripes across the pad.

$9 at Walmart. A big squeeze of goop, two shot glasses of spirits, stir vigorously, and you’re ready to rock.

Dip in the sponge brush and apply liberally in one inch wide stripes every 10-12 inches from the top to around the knees.

Allow to dry for about 1/2 hour, and you should be good to go.

The result is a tacky feeling series of stripes that should keep the bag from sliding off of the pad.  Remarkably easy.  I hope to try it out soon and report back.
