I got up early this morning to work off all of the gluttony from yesterday. I haven’t ridden south for a while, so I headed off to the river from York Haven, and then down to Emigsville. ‘Came back on the Susquehanna Trail.
The temperature started at 36F and finished about 44F. I started with a wool sweater over an underarmor shirt, all under the new jacket – too warm. After two miles uphill I stopped and switched to a light flannel shirt I had packed. That was much more comfortable, but it was also soaked with sweat by the time I finished. I think I need to find some lightweight wool or some other material with wicking properties. I also wore a balaclava, which proved just right. For my legs, I went with a very old pair of lightweight tights under the wind pants. When I started my knees were cold, but once I warmed up I felt fine. Unfortunately those tights are rapidly losing their elasticity, so I don’t know how many more rides they have left. I’m wondering if maybe a pair of leg warmers might be all I need.
I sure wasn’t used to the hills. I had to back down quite a bit and use the granny more than usual. Hopefully I can get back to more frequent rides and build my stamina back up, but to be riding this late in the year with these temperatures – who’s complaining?
The other thing I noticed was how much more of the landscape you can see without the leaves on the trees. There were a couple of houses in spots where I never noticed before, as well as old stonework that would normally be hidden along a river or railroad track. ‘Shoulda taken some pics!
